The question was „Is it dangerous to copy and paste confidential data into Google Translate? In other words, does Google copy, keep and use all translated material?”Ī guy working at Google (at the time) replied in 2017: “Personally, even before working at Google I trusted Google's security and privacy protection more than my own, and now I do work there I realize that I was underestimating just how good Google is at this stuff. In 2016, a question was posted on the website about why Google Translate service lacks specific Privacy Policy or Terms and Conditions and only a link to the general Privacy & Terms are offered by Google. The article publisher shows that “while the specific agreement will probably not (or should not at least!) become public, he (the client) has clearly disclosed and stored his customer’s confidential content to a server under the control of a third party, and therefore clearly breaching his own privacy commitments.” In 2015, an article was published on LinkedIn, telling a story about how the confidentiality relation between the article publisher’s company and a cautious client that was also a legal specialist, was breached, when the client uploaded some articles of the signed contract into Google Translate because he needed “to get a rough idea of some legal clauses”. Concerns about confidentiality breaches were fairly raised as non-disclosure agreements or confidentiality clauses may be violated if official documents (like contracts) were translated using Google Translate without blurring or eliminating confidential information or personal data. In 2014 a guy named Brian Krebs from United Language Group asked this question: “Why Google Translate is bad for business?” The article brought arguments about the risk of inaccurate translations and the location of the information introduced in the translation platform. Articles were written in 2014, 20 (these were the first results I received on Google) about the issue. I made a little research and found that I was not the only one asking myself questions about the privacy policy of Google Translate. To be clear, my purpose is not to discredit Google in any way as I use Google services and products and I trust them with my personal data, but I merely want to point out some unclarities about this particular service and I know some of my concerns were raised in the past.
